Reasearch / work
I started PhD studies within the Urban Climate Group in May 2011. The aim of my research is to provide a better understanding on how various types of urban vegetation affect local climate in a high latitude city through shading and transpiration, at different times of day and year. The research is based on field measurements conducted at several sites in Gothenburg, characterized by different types and amount of greenery (street trees, parks, open grass). To analyse the effect of vegetation on local climate and thermal comfort, different parameters have been measured – transmissivity of solar radiation through foliated and defoliated tree crowns, air temperature and humidity in thirteen vegetated and non-vegetated sites throughout the year, as well as transpiration of the most common tree species. The results of transpiration measurements will be combined with LIDAR vegetation data and leaf area index measurements to estimate city-scale cooling effect provided by urban trees.
