Nitrogen (N) losses from arable land are non-desirable from both an environmental and an economic point of view. In order to reduce N losses from arable fields we have to understand the fate of the fertilizers applied. Complete N budgets of arable fields help to identify N loss pathways, but some terms are difficult to quantify, particularly dinitrogen (N2) emissions. This hinders our ability to develop effective mitigation strategies for fertilizer N losses. My PhD project addresses this hindrance by means of stable isotope techniques and a combination of laboratory and field experiments. The time frame of the project is 2014-2018.
