Reasearch / work
My research is mainly devoted to the effects of air pollutants on plants. In particular the effects of ozone on crops has been in focus, but also the influence of carbon dioxide and other pollutants on plants are included. Apart from agricultural crops, I have also been studying effects of pollutants on wild plants and on lichens. An important aim of the research is to identify dose-response relationships between ozone uptake and effects and to identify so called critical levels for ozone. These are a type of limit values to be used in the European collaboration for the improvement of air quality. In this context, micrometeorological and ecophysiological techniques are of crucial importance. Also some more basic aspects of plant ecophysiology are covered by my scientific activity, especially related to crops. These include the influence of different factors on the accumulation of of nitrogen, carbohydrates and other components in the plant. Bioindication for elevated ozone concentrations based on sensitive plants forms another part of my scientific activity.
